Konawaena’s Emalia Galdeira led Big Island qualifiers heading into today’s finals of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association track and field championships at the Keaau High School track.
The field events start at 3 p.m. and track at 4 p.m.
Galdeira, a senior multisport standout, claimed the No. 1 seed in the girls 100-meter hurdles at 14.73 and triple jump at 36-02.25 in a strong day. She also was second in the long jump and fourth in the 100 meters. In the only girls final Friday, the high jump, Galdeira placed fourth.
Hilo sophomore Carmen Garson-Shumway was the only other Big Island Interscholastic Federation girl to claim a No. 1 seed in qualifying, placing first in the 1,500 meters in 5:10.46.
On the boys’ side, Kamehameha’s Aukai Akau, the defending state champion, earned the top seed in the long jump, going 22.-01.75.
Keaau’s Alexander Engdahl captured the No. 1 seed in the 300-meter hurdles in 40.71 while the Cougars 4×100-meter relay team earned the No. 1 seed in a blistering 43.30.
